Chapter 8

Feeling morose and unable to put my finger on why, I pulled into our driveway and frowned at the large black Cadillac sitting in the driveway. It looked familiar, but I couldn’t place where I’d seen it until I stepped inside and saw the two women flanking my mother on the couch.

“Welcome home, Bryce,” mom said, rising and setting her glass of wine down as she stepped close to embrace me with a warm hug.

My eyes locked on the pair, adjusting their stylish dresses as they resettled themselves on the couch. I tried not to stare at mom’s dark blue dress, hanging loosely around her shoulders and hanging down in thick folds that did little to hide the deep shadow between her breasts.

“What are you doing here?” I asked the pair, watching me with knowing smiles from the couch.

“Eliska and Anasta are here to help me explain…” Mom’s cheeks turned a deep scarlet as she drew me over to a cushioned chair they’d drawn before the couch.

“We’re here to explain the inexplicable,” one of the twins said, setting her glass of wine down on the side table and glancing at her sister. “But you look like a smart young man, and I think you’ve already guessed at some of it, yes?”

The sister who spoke, Anasta, I guessed, didn’t have her sister’s syrupy sweet voice. Her’s came out with a sexy rasp, and I found her intense stare comforting. While Eliska and even my stepmom had more behind their eyes than they showed on their faces, this woman wore her emotions on her sleeve, which was refreshing.

“I’m guessing this has something to do with Succubati, Romans, and me being an Incubus?” I chuckled but the sound died off when I saw the serious expressions confronting me.

“Where have you heard those phrases?” My stepmom asked, muttering under her breath, “If those girls ruined everything, I’ll…”

“The girl I just dropped off at Omega House mentioned something about it.”

The three women shared unamused glances, mom crossing her arms beneath her massive breasts.

“Did she tell you her true name? Or an alias?”

“Maybe an alias,” I said, frowning. “It sounded too strange to be real. She said it was Esmerleda something, something, the third.”

“Essy…” mom said with a shake of her head, glancing at the other two who grimaced. “Where’s Bonwhin, to keep her daughter in line?”

“Forget the girl,” Anasta said with a flick of her fingers. “She’ll be dealt with soon.” The woman’s bright blue eyes locked on me. “I suppose she sucked out at least a dram of your essence,” when my gaze shifted, she sniffed, seeing the confirmation on my face. “Hmph, figures. Forget her.”

Though she repeated the phrase, it was clear from the hard set of her mouth that she would be having harsh words with fair little Esmerelda.

“I think I should start at the beginning,” Eliska said, rising and stepping over to the small bar nook and refilling her glass. Pouring another, she brought it over to me and I raised my eyebrows at mom as I took it from her.
